The SA trader's sweet spot

For South Africans the London-New York overlap lands conveniently in the afternoon (roughly 14:00-18:00 SAST depending on US daylight saving). You can hold a day job and still trade the most liquid hours of the global market. US data releases land at 14:30 SAST (15:30 when the US is off daylight saving) and move USD/ZAR sharply - know the calendar before you hold through them.

Educational tool - verify with your broker

This calculator uses industry-standard formulas and the rates you enter. Contract specifications, pip values, swap charges and margin requirements differ between brokers, so confirm the numbers on your own platform before placing a trade. Nothing here is financial advice, and trading involves substantial risk of loss.

How this calculator works, and why it matters.

Why session times shift during the year

Sessions follow local office hours, not UTC. When London or New York changes its clocks, the session's SAST time shifts by an hour - South Africa doesn't observe daylight saving. This page computes everything from each market's own timezone, so it's correct year-round.

The weekend, in SAST

The retail FX week runs from early Monday morning (Sydney's open, around 00:00-01:00 SAST) to Friday night when New York closes (23:00-24:00 SAST). The exact hour shifts with daylight saving on each end.

Match the pair to the session

Currencies move most when their home market is at its desk: JPY in Tokyo hours, GBP and EUR in London hours, USD (and USD/ZAR) once New York joins. Trading a pair in its dead hours mostly buys you spread and chop.

Frequently asked questions

?

What time does the forex market open in South Africa?

The retail forex week starts with Sydney's Monday morning, which lands around midnight to 01:00 SAST depending on Australian daylight saving, and ends when New York closes on Friday around 23:00-24:00 SAST. South Africa does not observe daylight saving, so it is the other markets' clock changes that move these times.

?

What is the best time to trade forex in South Africa?

The London-New York overlap, which falls in the South African afternoon - roughly 14:00-18:00 SAST when the US is on daylight saving and 15:00-19:00 SAST in the northern winter. It carries the deepest liquidity and tightest spreads of the day, and it fits around a normal SA work schedule.

?

Why do forex session times change during the year?

Sessions follow local business hours in each financial centre, not fixed UTC times. When London, New York or Sydney switch to or from daylight saving, their sessions shift by an hour in SAST. This page computes times from each market's own timezone, so it stays correct year-round.

?

Is the forex market open on weekends?

No. The over-the-counter market effectively closes when New York ends on Friday (around 23:00 SAST) and reopens with the Asia-Pacific open early Monday morning SAST. Prices can gap over the weekend, which is why holding positions through Friday's close carries extra risk.
