Understand the numbers
How this calculator works, and why it matters.
What is a pip?
A pip is the standard unit of price movement: 0.0001 on most pairs, 0.01 on JPY-quoted pairs. Many brokers also show a fifth “pipette” digit - ten pipettes make one pip.
Where the conversion goes wrong
One lot of USD/JPY moves ¥1,000 per pip - not $1,000. The yen amount must be divided by the USD/JPY rate (about $6.45 at 155.00). This calculator always converts through the quote currency, so JPY and cross pairs come out right.
Why it matters for sizing
Pip value × stop distance = money at risk. Get pip value wrong by 10× and your “1% risk” trade is a 10% trade. Pair this tool with the position size calculator before every entry.
Frequently asked questions
How much is one pip worth in rand?
On EUR/USD, one pip on a standard lot is $10, which at a USD/ZAR rate of 18.50 is R185. On a micro lot (0.01) that becomes about R1.85 per pip. Pairs not quoted in dollars need an extra conversion step through the quote currency, which this calculator handles automatically.
Why is pip value different on JPY pairs?
JPY pairs measure pips at the second decimal (0.01) instead of the fourth (0.0001), so one pip on a standard lot is 1,000 yen - not 10 dollars. At a USD/JPY rate of 155.00 that is about $6.45 per pip. Many calculators get this wrong by treating the yen amount as dollars.
What is a pip in forex?
A pip (percentage in point) is the standard unit of price movement: 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on JPY-quoted pairs. Brokers often display a fifth, smaller digit called a pipette - ten pipettes make one pip.
